Mesmers are the trademark class of the Guild Wars series and are one of the most unique, subtle and deadly classes in any game. Specializing in manipulating foes and countering their opponents strategies, a good mesmer will generate more hate in PvP chat than all other classes combined. Class Mechanic: Illusions Power core necro, what a mad man. The signet trait is very good. Necro mainhand dagger is highly underestimated. The selfheal is insane (base heal of 4050, 4850 while bleeding) and being able to put yourself into combat at will is fantastic for Signet of Undead. WvW roaming builds are mostly self sufficient but look for combinations that complement eachother (for example one spec that provides stealth & cc and the other boons & cleanses) For pvp it's the same principle, but a roamer + sidenoder have the most carry potential. Ranger is probably the most well-rounded "generalist" class for new players. Aside from pet, Ranger doesn't really have any gimmicks. It's probably even more straightforward than even Warrior. You have skills, and they have cooldowns. That's it. Where Ranger excels in endgame content is its incredible utility.
Sharper play and the right build are simply far more important than ilvl in this game. To illustrate the point, here's a video where I solo an HoT champion in level 60-65 blue/green gear on my weaver. At about 50%, another player enters, presumably geared in 80 exotic (or better) as most players in HoT are.
Honestly, If you haven't played before, play your first character through without boosting. Leveling to 80 isn't super difficult, and you get map progression and hero points. Most importantly, you learn how to play your character. Do your personal story, explore the world, do events. GW2 is a slow burn meant to be enjoyed. XPO4i.
